WINE CENTER IN VALTICE

Valtice is my hometown and wine capital of Czech Republic. The task was to create an object of the culture of wine which will serve for its presentation and production. It can be used as a learning center and can provide occasionally accommodation. The beauty of the landscape and the surroundings, connected with a deep culture of wine, make Valtice part of one of the largest Unesco cultural landscape  complex.

Concept house as a wall is based on an old tradition: during the founding of new vineyards, the stones from stony slopes, were brought to the edge of the site to create large stonewall. So the building has the form of linear notch in the landscape. Second concept is house as a way. The house is the continuing of the axis made of alley with a chapel going from town. “Through” the house goes also cycling path and wine trail.

The house is clamped between two converging axes made of stone walls slowly incising the slope, opening to the south view to the city and closing to the north. Most of the producing part is underground. Thanks to sloping land, all production works on gravity principles.
